Write about five different characters in Tom Sawyer. One of your characters must be Tom and one must be Huck. Describe the character. Then write about what you have noticed about each character's description, their motivations, their personality, and their beliefs. Write a short paragraph about each of your chosen characters.
Tom Sawyer is a wily young man, with the capabilities of Sherlock Holmes. He's clever, and very superstitious. He's intelligent, in the sense that he can do pretty much anything he puts his mind to. Basically, he's the epitome of the mischievous young child of then. Tom likes to do things his way. He pretends to be anything, from a tragic dead child being mourned, to a pirate, roaming the high seas. His external motivations obviously boil down to Becky Thatcher, the daughter of an illustrious judge(pretty good use of vocab right there). Tom is obsessed with impressing her, and establishing a relationship with her, although not all goes as planned.
Huckleberry Finn is the son of a drunkard. He's the pariah of the village, and the subject of water cooler talk of the young boys. He never has to do anything. For this, the other boys envy him. He's not required to attend school, church, do chores, and the other laborious jobs all typical young boys typically attempt to refuse to do. He's very similar to Tom, in the subject of superstition. Huck's internal motivation, to me, is trying to fit in. His description makes it conspicuous that he's different.
The third one to complete this young trio is Joe Harper. Joe Harper is the war-buddy of Tom. They play war together, calculate who won and who lost, and schedule the next battle date. Joe is like both Tom and Huckleberry. His motivation is to strike grief in those who wronged him(he was punished for stealing cream he apparently knew nothing about).
Aunt Polly is the loving aunt of Tom Sawyer. She always tries to give Tom the greatest childhood he can imagine, but it never seems to work out. She tries and tries, but tries too much. The result of this is just, bad. There's no good way of efficiently wording it. Her motivation is keeping Tom Sawyer as happy as possible. She feels bad for him, because his parents are dead.
Sid is the younger brother of Tom. He always snitches on Tom, and always observes him for the next chance to get him in trouble. I believe he's very attached to Aunt Polly, and doesn't enjoy it when Aunt Polly is deceived by Tom, so he helps her deal justice to him. I speculate his motivation is to help Aunt Polly discipline Tom, so Polly can be the best parent possible.
